Better than a ten horsepower disposal
Friday, June 10th, 2011
Do you remember the TV show “Home Improvement” and how Tim “the tool man” Taylor was always on a quest to beef up his power tools? Does anybody really need a ten horsepower disposal? As Spirit-filled Christians our lives should be a mirror of His greater power in us. Tim always wanted to re-wire his power tools to make them more powerful….the baptism of the Holy Spirit is how we are re-wired so we can live the greater power life Jesus promised.
Acts 1:18- Are you an attractive witness of Jesus Christ? The power relationship of the Holy Spirit is what produces the fruit of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:22,23). The fruit of this relationship is what will attract others that come across our paths. We need all the Spirit’s fruit active in our lives to make us attractive and empowered to be effectual witnesses. We need the greater power that the Holy Spirit will give us in wisdom, words and works to cast down the vain imaginations and foolish arguments with which the enemy will try to limit our effectiveness. In closing, it is in our relationship with the Holy Spirit that will enable us to live the victorious life of greater power for the Kingdom of God. Your prayer life is what determines your power level. Let His fruit be seen in you, have a tangible sensory experience with Him develop a prayer life and you will achieve His greater power and I promise you its better than a ten horsepower disposal!
Greater Grace
Wednesday, April 27th, 2011
It has been said that “mercy” is when we don’t get what we deserve and “grace” is when we get what we don’t deserve. A definition of “grace” is also “unmerited favor” in other words one cannot buy or earn grace but it is from the Father’s heart that we can access His favor. In May our “Greater Things” subject is Grace. Let’s consider some examples and responses to the grace we can receive because of Christ’s redemptive work on the cross.
Zacchaeus- Luke 19:1-10- Zacchaeus was a man of opportunity. He had spent his life as a tax collector to take advantage of a Roman tax system that gave him the opportunity to make financial gains. Zacchaeus knew Jesus was going to be passing by and staked out a tree so he could see Him. Remember the old kid’s song that said, “Zacchaeus was a wee little man.” So he ran ahead and climbed a tree. How do you respond when you have an opportunity to see Jesus as He passes by? When we meet as a congregation Jesus passes by, the still small voice calling you to prayer or Bible study is Jesus graciously calling us to fellowship. Like Zacchaeus, we also can benefit from a family relationship. Jesus declared Zacchaeus to be a son of Abraham, as children of faith we are sons and daughters of Abraham also and joint-heirs with Jesus. The origin of this is we must take advantage of the opportunity to receive His grace.
Mary- Mark 14:3-9- The experience of Jesus’s greater grace was what motivated Mary to perform an eternal memorial of the Savior. What kind of memorial to the Savior’s grace do you perform? A point in this story I want to focus on is how some of the people criticized Mary for doing this, said she wasted the value of the oil. It is religious people that will watch and wait for a chance to criticize as you worship? Why do they do this? Jealousy is a major reason, they want what you have but don’t want to humble themselves and give a valued thing in worship. His grace is available to all who would call upon His name and be saved. Your past can be forgiven and He will cast your sins as far as the East is from the West. When you accept the cleansing work of His blood, like Mary, you will want to perform an eternal memorial to our Savior.
David- Psalm 51:10-13- King David was the sweet psalmist of Israel, the man after God’s own heart. He was also a man who sinned and paid a very high price for the sin of adultery with Bathsheba. But David knew the power of repentance and how to be restored. The key to keep walking in this greater grace is to walk in an attitude of repentance. As soon as you feel the Holy Spirit has been grieved ask Him where you fell short and immediately repent and ask forgiveness. David wrote Psalm 51 as a cry of repentance and restoration of God’s grace. Look at what David asked for, a clean heart, a steadfast spirit, His presence and a continued relationship. Is there something not allowing you to receive His grace? You may need to go to the Father and repent so you can walk in the fullness of His grace. 1 John 1:9 tells us when we confess our sins He is faithful and just to forgive and restore us to a position to receive His grace.

A Love Song
Tuesday, February 1st, 2011
“Hey, won’t you play another somebody done somebody wrong song”? Some of us remember that old country song from the 1970’s. The subject of love has been a popular idea for music since Solomon wrote his chart-topping “Song of Solomon” and was put through to Jerusalem of the hit show “Israeli Idol.” At Covenant Life Church in February we are considering the idea of greater love, let’s use three songs from the 1970’s and 1980’s as we remember Miss Tina Turner’s question, “What’s Love Got to do with it?” I pray you enjoy this.
“What about love?” by Heart- Genesis 2:18- Long before Ann and Nancy Wilson asked, “Don’t you want someone to care about you?” our Father said, “It is not good for man to be alone.” We are hardwired by the Father to be in relationships with each other. As we read through His word we can see that relationships exist from Genesis 1:26 when the Father said, “Let US make man…” to Revelation 22:17 when the Spirit and the Bride in agreement declare that the Savior would return quickly. I encourage you today to look for relationships that can be started in and out of your church, setting, socialize with each other, remember the book of Acts says the disciples broke bread and fellowshipped from house to house and fed thousands on the Galilean hillside. Let’s care for another and look forward to an eternity with each other.
“Love will keep us together “by The Captain and Tennille- 1st Peter 4:8- Peter tells us to have a fervent love for each other. Mr. Webster tells us that “fervent” means and intense devotion toward another. It is this devotion that allows us to overlook and forgive when “somebody does somebody wrong” and I know there are times when you feel like you have been done wrong by a brother or sister. This fervent love is the way that we can change the tombstone of offense into a steppingstone of forgiveness, the end result of this is the restoration of the love relationship that the Captain and Tennille say will keep us together.
“I want to know what love is” by Foreigner- 1st Corinthians 13:4-7- “In my life there has been heartache and pain.” This is the result of a human, fleshly love. When describing a spirit filled love Paul wrote the great love chapter of 1 Corinthians 13, use it as a mirror on your life and see how you line up, then use it to teach others about what Paul declared to be the greatest thing we can experience on this earth. Let the way love conducts itself be the guideline for our conduct with all who come across our path. As we pursue Jesus and walk in love we will become known as people who care and the church that love is building in our city. Blessings! Show some love this week!

A King’s Primer
Wednesday, January 5th, 2011
Have you ever played checkers? One of the strategies is to get as many “Kings” as possible. Kings can move in any direction within their own Kingdom..(color) The purpose of Kingship is to be able to move quicker and easier to overtake the opponent (the enemy) The Kingdom of God works the same way…He wants to be able to move us within His Kingdom in order to take the emery off the table. The scripture says we are Kings and Priests unto our God…Royalty…but not to just be royalty…to jump the emery and take him off the board…this primer may give you some insight as to what the bible says about your Kingship…
Do you know that Revelation 5:10 tells us that Jesus made us to be kings and priests and we shall reign on the earth? This verse is in the present tense and it is the Father’s desire for us to live in this most favored condition. It is the Father’s love that He gives us a concise primer for how to be a king in the kingdom. Let’s consider the life of David and the surrounding events of his coronation as the king of the united Israel.
2 Samuel 5:1-5- A King is known by the people.- David was known by the other shepherds, he was known by the military officials, he was known by the royal family and he was known by all the other citizens of Israel. The leaders and people declared that, “Indeed we are your bone and your flesh.” Not only must we know the king but we must know the king’s capabilities. We must also know that the person has the call of God on their lives. The way to determine a king’s nature is that covenant always precedes anointing. The Father will only anoint those who have a covenant prayer life active in their lives.
2 Samuel 5:6-12- A King does not pay attention to the nay-sayers- Some have said that the Jebusite spirit is a religious spirit that always doubts and questions the new leader or new thing that the Father is raising up or performing. David did not respond to the Jebusite’s nay saying but used their words to encourage his followers on to a great victory and the capture of Jerusalem. The Jebusite often functions out of a jealous or fearful spirit, ignore them and believe what the Father has spoken to you. Like David, you can speak great words of faith and victory because you know who established and who exalted you. The result of an active covenant prayer life.
2 Samuel 5:17-25- A King seeks and responds to the Father’s guidance.- Isaiah 43:18,19 and Phillipians 3:12-14 illustrate the principle that the Father is always leading us on to new things and we must not get too comfortable in the now or even the past. This is the way the Father keeps us in total dependence on Him. Too often we anticipate and try to get ahead of His perfect will. Psalm 37:23 tells us “that the steps (path and pace) of a righteous man are ordered by the Lord.”
When we develop a covenant prayer life and grow as a king the Father will hold your heart in His hand (Proverbs 21:1) and guide you from faith to faith and from glory to glory as He fulfills His destiny for you.
Jump the enemy this year!
2011- An Acceptable Time Year.
Monday, December 20th, 2010
Habakkuk 2:2, 3- Has the Father given you a word or a vision that has yet to come to pass in your life? Do you feel like it has been forever since the Father spoke a promise to you? I just want to encourage you that when the Father speaks a promise, He immediately fashions an acceptable time for the promised word to be fulfilled. As the Father is working on our behalf we must continue in praise (the language of faith) and thanksgiving (the action of faith), then we will see 2011 be an “Acceptable Time” year. Let’s consider the encouragement of Isaiah 43:18,19 as a foundation of our study.
“Behold, I will do a new thing”- Remember the classic anthem of faith by Dottie Rambo, “We Shall Behold Him”? Let’s define “behold” as- “having a tangible sensory experience”. Individually and as a church we have been pressing in and desiring to see the Father do a new thing in our lives and church. We are on the cusp of the acceptable time Habakkuk prophesied, so many of us have waited and even questioned if the Father is ever going to do what He promised. I want to encourage you to finish 2010 celebrating victoriously crossing the finish line. Don’t grow weary, give up or even reject your destiny but let 2011 be the year of the new thing the Father has for you and your part in our local church.
“Now it shall spring forth”- 2011 is a set time year of spiritual seismic activity, a year of upheavals. We all have walls and gates that are keeping us as prisoners and not being able to receive the Father’s goodness. Far too long we have been held captive by the enemy, but I encourage you to remember the Father fashioned a seismic event and freed Paul and Silas from prison (Acts 16:26) and He will cause a upheaval in your life to spring you forth and into the new thing He has for you. Another aspect of the upheavals is that a tsunami of the Father’s glory will flood a standard of righteousness in our lives and church. “Father, we thank You that 2011 is a acceptable time year, we thank You that You are the God of the now, thank You that in 2011 Your miraculous works will spring forth.”
“Shall you not know it”- “Know” like “behold” can have the definition- “to have a tangible sensory experience. i.e. when a husband knows his wife”. This is the Father’s desire that we would have this experience with Him that is much more than goose-bumps (God-bumps, as I have heard them called). That Father gives us the choice as to whether we know the new thing or not. Two things that can keep us from knowing the new thing are fear and jealousy. Fear and jealousy cause us to hang onto the old or past moves. As we stand here on the edge of 2011 let us be a people that will declare this is the acceptable time of the Father’s favor and we embrace the new thing the Father has for us as we enjoy the tangible sensory experience of the Father’s presence. May you have a tangible sensory experience with the Father, Son and Holy Spirit in 2011!
Henry J. Deutschendorf
Friday, December 10th, 2010
Pop/Folk songwriter Henry J. Deutschendorf wrote a love song for his wife in 1974. In the song Henry used very figurative and powerful imagery from nature and his local environs. In the song he described how powerful the emotion of love can be. The song has gone on to become one of the most requested songs for couples at their wedding, the neat thing being that Henry did not mention his wife’s name anywhere in the lyrics. As we examine the lyrics we can also feel a love for our Father and remember that in 1st John the Father is described by saying, “God, Who is love.”
“You fill up my senses like a night in the forest…”- Have you ever had those times when the Father’s love was felt so powerful it was overwhelming? Think about the things that can overwhelm our senses, the South rim of the Grand Canyon, a Caribbean white sand beach and its crystal clear water, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel or South Dakota’s Mount Rushmore. If these natural things can overwhelm us, how much more the Father’s love? It is a truly a multi-sensory experience. You will laugh, cry, worship, pray and the more time you spend with Him in this love-fest, He will always respond and completely fill you to full and overflowing. Have you ever spend the night in a forest? The absolute quiet, the brilliant stars, the odor’s from the trees, these are overwhelming like His love.
“Come let me love you, come love me again…”- The Father desires to love us each and every day and He also desires that we love Him each and every day. Love is what caused the Father to give us the greatest gift the world has ever known, His son Jesus to be the perfect sacrifice for our sins. You see, love is designed to be given and returned. This is why the source of giving is to be love, He gave us love, we give love back to Him. Notice the last word is “again” for this reminds us that giving of love to the Father and to others is a lifelong process and not a onetime event.
“Come let me love you, let me give my life to you…”- The word “come” speaks of a drawing near or an experience. The Father desires a daily time of love with us, this is done through prayer. Prayer is having a loving relationship communication with the Father. Prayer is the way we can crucify our flesh and decide to pray what are His desires and His will. The Father is looking for the person that will demonstrate their love for Him. Remember Jesus taught that the greatest love we can demonstrate is to lay down our life for someone else. He exhibited this love; can we do the same and love the Father with our lives?
In this season when the world celebrates our savior remember to give time….love loudly and let Him fill up your senses with His peace! Christ the savior is King of Kings!
Each Sunday at 10:30 Am and Wednesday"s at 7:00Pm we gather to worship….come fill up your senses!
Frozen grapes?
Tuesday, November 30th, 2010
I love fruit! I can eat just about any kind, any time, especially frozen grapes….I had never thought of freezing grapes but was introduced to this wonderful discovery by a college student staying at our house during a break. She said freezing grapes makes them last longer and you don’t have to buy so many….spoken like a true college student with no money (LOL)......but for some reason I do not like mangos…cooked, raw, frozen or otherwise….I will eat them only when forced to…...there is another fruit that I don’t care much for either….its in the Bible.
Its one of the fruits of the Spirit listed in Galatians 5: 22 “LONGSUFFERING” (really? couldn’t it have been abbreviated suffering, or short suffering?) If we are to swallow this fruit it will take Endurance.
Hebrews 10:36-39- A person of strong physical endurance can complete the Ironman Triathalon in Hawaii, a 3 mile swim, 120 mile bike race and a 26 mile marathon. I don’t know about you but I got tired just typing the info. The Father knows we have need of endurance to do His will. We must endure the enemy, our flesh and others. There are times of grace when life and ministry is easy but there are times when it is a hellacious knock down drag out fight that only the Father’s endurance can get us through. When we endure and defeat the enemy then we will see the Father’s promise and the result of “LONGSUFFERING”
Example- Hebrews 12:1,2- Jesus was all God and all man. What was the shame that He endured? The ridicule, persecution, comments, even the Father looking away from the cross as He took on man’s debt of sin and became sin for us. I said Jesus was all man and He was in touch with His emotions. Do you feel ridiculed when you try to witness, concerned about what others may say about you? Jesus can relate. He knows what it feels like to have your closest friends betray and desert you. It is for the joy of our fulfilled destiny that we can endure when our friends bail on us. Endure and Jesus will turn shame into joy.
Equipped- Ephesians 6:10-18- Having done all you know to do, stand! Stand on what? The same rock that the church is built on (Matthew 16:18). Stand on the fact that you have a covenant relationship with the Creator of this universe and there is absolutely nothing that can resist Him. From today forward the Father has given you the equpment for strategic war turning victories. The belt of truth to destroy satan’s lies, the Father’s righteousness when people speak rumors about you, the shoes of prepared peace as you walk through this world, helmet of salvation means freedom from doubts, worries and fears (a man said one time that some people worry so much about worrying that if they didn’t worry they would worry about not worrying). I mean the word just sounds bad, “Worry, worry, worry!” See what I mean? You can have freedom from fears. Faith as a shield to protect your front and His glory as your rear guard. His glory reminds us of past triumphs and faith leads us into new victories. The sword of the spirit, His word, His covenants, His love and His grace that as Romans 11:29 tells His gifts anf callings will never be recalled. The Father has called you to a life of overflowing abundance and miracles of strategic importance. He never called us to accept defeat or settle for a truce. We are called to be overcoming people of endurance, read the letters to the seven churches in Revelation 2 and 3 and see what the Father has for those who endure. One of the overcomer’s rewards is a new name. The Father is calling you “Victorious” and you are no longer to be called a “victim” Remember, you are equipped for endurance so when its time to swallow the fruit or exhibit the fruit of “LONGSUFFERING” you will have what it takes!
Exponential Power
Monday, November 15th, 2010
When the geniuses that changed arithmetic to math and numbers to letters made those changes, I was left in the dust! But for some reason I grasped exponents and understood how a number could be multiplied by itself over and over again to a huge result…the concept of exponential power. That is the same kind of power that was demonstrated through the life of Christ and the power that is groaning to be revealed in the redeemed of Christ. Whether feeding thousands with a couple of sardine sandwiches or just a realization of a power drain (from the hem of His garment) His power is still working through His body….and we are His body….we are the body of Christ called to do these things and greater in scope. With that in mind read the following about faith and how faith can exponentially be increased in our lives!
Matthew 17:20- We are all aware that the mustard seed is an incredibly small seed but what we often overlook is the fact that every seed has in it the power it needs to fulfill it’s destiny and to become the great tree the Father destined it to become. We are like that mustard seed, within us is the power to become what the Father designed us to be. Hebrews 11 is known as the Faith chapter and in it we see three verses that can raise our faith to powerful faith to cause us to become the great men and women of God we are designed to be. My prayer for you is that you will receive what you are reading and it would become living and active in your life and you will see the Father manifest new and miraculous events in your life.
Faith- Hebrews 11: 1- Mr. Webster tells us that the definition of substance is the essential requisite. What is your hope? What are you believing the Father to do in your life? Allow me to amplify this verse, Faith is the substance (the essential requirement) of things hoped for. We can now begin to see the importance of us having faith. Let’s expand the word substance into substantial and ask the question, “How substantial is your faith?” Jesus is more concerned about the quality of our faith than the quantity. Our faith must have the seed- quality to produce the tree-quantity of abundant fruit. Let’s look at the evidence of things not seen. We live at the bottom of an ocean of air, I’ve never seen air but I see evidence of air as tree limbs move in the breeze or in the bubbles coming from a scuba diver’s air-tank. I see the evidence of the Father in sunrises and sunsets (Google ‘California sunsets’ to see evidence of the Father’s creativity). May your faith from this day grow to be an substantial and evident faith.
Faith Squared- Hebrews 11:6- We could shorten this and say that we must have faith as we believe God is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do as we spend time developing our prayer life and growing a faith-filled covenant relationship with with. King Uzziah had a faith-filled covenant-relationship with the Father and diligently sought Him and 2nd Chronicles 26:5 relates that God caused him to prosper. Faith springs up in the sick person when he declares that the Lord is his healer, it springs up in the impoverished who declares the Lord is his provider and Jesus is his source of abundant life and when the sinner declares that Jesus is his Yeshua (sotaria- our deliverer, our liberator and the one who prospers us). When we diligently seek the Father, we make ourselves attractive to Him. 2nd Chronicles 16:9 tells us that the Father’s eyes continually run to and fro throughout the whole earth seeking the people He can show Himself strong to. It is the attractiveness of our diligence that causes the Father to quit scanning and see us as faith-filled disciples.
Faith Cubed- Hebrews 11:13- So now the question is this, how can we get the unseen of the prayer request to the seen of the praise report? Ever notice how faith seems to mandate us to speak in the past-tense? Jesus said, “When you pray, if you believe as though you have received what you have asked for, you shall have it.” The Father spoke this way at the creation, “Let there be….” and it was. Now if I may carry it out further, and I know you caught the algebraic references of “squared” and “cubed” I will illustrate how the Father works. At the creation the Father in faith declared, “Let there be light.” Jesus the “Yes” and “Amen” of the creation agreed and squared His faith with the Father’s faith and the Holy Spirit, cubed His faith with the Father’s and the Son’s faith manifest what the Father declared and the Son affirmed. In verse 13 there are four words in the past tense that will help us as we develop our faith. In faith the promises of the Father are seen afar off, by reading His word we become assured that the promises are for us, we then can lay hold to and the promises will be embraced as we confessed that all of the Father’s promises will only return to Him completed and fulfilled. May your faith be powerfully raised today.
Extreme Makeover: Spirit-filled life.
Monday, October 25th, 2010
Long before ABC had the show, Jesus was all about doing extreme makeovers in people’s lives. At the very start of His ministry we find Him saying, “Repent for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” Or to say this another way, “The kingdom is near and ready to do a extreme makeover in peoples situations.”
As you read this I pray the Holy Spirit would manifest His truth to you. We can agree that Lazurus was dead and he needed a radical person to help him out. And along came Jesus!! Now, you may not need to be raised from the dead, but poverty is financial death, divorce is marriage death and unemployment is a career death. There are lots of needs in our lives that need to go through the extreme makeover that only Jesus can bring. John 10:10 tells us that the devil is all about stealing, killing and destroying but Jesus brings an abundant, fresh and brand new life.
Let’s examine the resurrection at Lazarus’s tomb for the five things that Jesus tells us are needed for our makeover. Vs. 39- Take away the stone- We must decide that we the current situation must be destroyed and walk in the newness of life Jesus has for us. Don’t hang onto your past, the good and bad of it but release it and press forward. Vs. 40- Did I not say that if you would believe you would see the glory of God- The Father is looking for the man, the woman and the church that He can show Himself strong for. What do you need The Father to do for you. If you follow Hebrews 11:6, all that is needed is for you to diligently seek Him and believe that He will reward you. Vs. 41,42- Pray, Pray and PRAY- How do you think the Father looks at you? Jesus said that He knew the Father loved Him but it was because of the people that He said His prayer. Don’t let others opinions of you bring you down. They need what you are going after as much as you do. Develop your dialogue with the Father by prayer and word study. Vs. 43- Lazarus, come forth- Jesus loves you enough that He calls you by name for a specific destiny. He knows what you need and He will do it for you. Do you answer His call? Realize that He will do an extreme makeover for you and the work is a custom masterpiece. Vs. 44- Loose him, let him go- We are put in our spheres of influence to help others as they go through their extreme makeover. Unlike the TV show instead of a vacation during the rebuild it is usually a very intense time of struggle. We are here to help each other receive the glorious things in our extreme makeover.
Say this: “YES I CAN!”
Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010
Cans are for the preservation of something good until its time to use it or to keep something in that we don’t want to use….The world uses the metaphor of opening a can mostly in a negative context…. “Don’t open that can of worms”….or like my old buddy R.D. Mercer used to say… “I’m gonna open a 55 gallon can of (bleep) and pour it on you”…But there is a much better can we should consider opening….the can of Compassion, Acceptance and Nurturing….Do you remember the 1970’s disco song, “Love will keep us together”? Today I want to share with you how this CAN will keep us together.
Compassionate- Matthew 9:36- Compassion is love moved into action. In John 3:16 the Father loved and moved, in Matthew 9:36 we see Jesus was moved with compassion and loved the people. Both of the scriptures illustrate a heart that was moved by love into action. What moves you to compassion? Love for your spouse? Love for your family? Love for fellow church members? Let’s be compassionate with each other, even to the point of being compassionate with the uncompassionate. It is this high level of compassion that moves God to respond to our prayer requests. He looks and sees our needs. When we pray according to His will and we have faith to ask Him, then He moves with compassion to answer. Let’s allow God to activate our love for one another and share His compassion with all we meet.
Acceptance- Romans 15:7- We glorify God by accepting the people who come across our paths. In John 17:22 Jesus declares the glory the Father gave Him He gives to us. Why? So we can in united glory worship the Father. This is a paradigm shift we must adapt to. If you insist on continuing to wait till you get to church to experience God’s glory, you will be penalized for delay of service. Rather, bring the glory Jesus wants to give you everyday, accept and unite with others, add your glory to others and we will see God’s Shekinah glory in our services as we worship together in unity.
Nurturing- 1st Timothy 5:1-2- Ladies have a genetic hardwiring God gave for a high desire to nurture. Paul tells us in 1st Timothy how and who to nurture. Men struggle with that more, but should still be nurturers….We must exhort or encourage all who are around us. Paul also says to do our nurturing in all purity. Ladies, the fathers and brothers God places in your life will receive your nurturing in the same purity that you are ministering it. You are our mothers and sisters in Him. Don’t let a religious spirit keep you from being the women, wives and mothers God calls you to be. Men, we need to be the husbands, fathers and brothers that God has called us to be to the ladies God has put in our families.
Remember Love…. (compassionate, accepting, nurture) Can keep us together. Say it again…. “YES I CAN!”
